Piling Up

The weather here has definitely taken a fall turn. The windows are open and I hear the trees rustling in the cool breeze. After the misery of a record breaking summer, this is cause for celebration and a call to begin living life in a cozier way. I have begun stocking up in preparation for the chilly months ahead. As you can see, my nightstand is about to buckle under the weight of all these lovely pages, waiting to be read. Pages filled with old friends that I long to get reacquainted with and others filled with friends I've yet to meet. These many choices have me paralyzed with indecision. Where should I begin?

  1. I am jealous. Living is south Florida we still ahve the A/C on and will until November! I lust for a crisp fall day! I dream of putting my beding out to air in the fresh air, but alas, it is not to be! But don't feel too sorry for me, as I will love it when it is January and I am out on my lanai in my Bonanno's! BTW- please post when you read Tim Russert's book, Big Russ and I...I love him and it seems like it would be such a great book too. My father died when I was just 6, so I would live to read Tim's take...

  2. I can see why you're paralyzed with indecision. That's a great stack of books you have to choose from. How about starting at the bottom with Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe?

  3. Don't you just love Jan Karon!! She is coming out with another book on Ocotober 23rd!!! I can't wait! I think it is about Father Tim when he was a boy. Enjoy the fall.

  5. I am enjoying this lovely day! The house is open and getting a good airing out. I'm looking forward to sleeping with the windows open tonight!

You have two of my favorites in your stack: Beverly Lewis and Jan Karon. You will also enjoy The Memory Keeper's Daughter. Have you read any Philip Gulley. I love his books for the simple wisdom and gentle humor.

  6. I LOVED The Memory Keeper's daughter. Also, for a completely different read, maybe Fried Green Tomatoes should be 2nd?

If you haven't already read them, you need to add The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair by Ann Monk Kidd.

Have fun with your lovely weather. We're still sweltering here.

  7. It's 98 degrees here so I'm not feeling the cooler weather. However, I have two stacks of books by my bed much like yours ready for me to go on literary adventures.

Where to start? I suggest just taking the book off the top and start there.

  8. Hmmm, well, I think I have read almost all of those books and my top 2 would be Fried Green Tomatoes and Blessed Are the Cheesemakers. Both are quick, easy reads.

  9. Me, too! I am so jealous as well. I need to do that too, catch up. But with us just moving in all my books are still in boxes! Lucky Ducky!

  11. There's autumn in the air here too which I just love. That's quite a stack of books you've got. There's actually only one on there that I've read so I guess that's the one I have to suggest, 'A year in Provence'. Would love to hear more about some of the others so do let us know which one's you enjoy over the coming months.

  12. I don't know, but the title of that top one, The Memory Keepers Daughter looks really good...

My mission is to go through all my magazines and try to get the number of them down. They are taking over my home!!

  16. Start with Fannie Flagg and then run out immediately and get her new one, "Can't Wait for Heaven", and read it. Wonderful book.

  18. love the mitford series too!! Our choir director is going up to Blowing Rock this month for Mitford days. (It actually may be this weekend--not sure). The thing about that series is the people seem like friends and the spiritual quotes are quite good--plus the humor--a good read. My husband loves these books--we read the first one together celebrating our 30th anniversary in the NC mountains!

  19. I vote for A Year In Provence. Loved the book!

And Beth said here something about Jan Karon coming out with a new book? That is wonderful! I live about 1 hour from Blowing Rock, NC, where Jan Karon used to live and the fictional "Mitford" is based on that town. In the next week or so they are having a Mitford Weekend and Jan will be there at different events. I would love to go....maybe I will!

I love Jan Karon, so cozy and sweet. I heard she is coming out with a new book, can't wait.

I know you will have many cozy times reading these great books. I might copy your list and get a few ready, myself.

  21. Hi
Have just found you and catching up with your recent posts. How I agree with your views on having a job at home ( although not financially rewarding ) definately so rewarding in many other ways. I always worked when my children were small out of financial need. When I decided to retire all my friends told how bored I would be! Bored not me I love it Gardening, sewing, reading etc. When did I ever find the time to work ( or the inclination) Good luck to you in your choices Mary

  25. Beverly Lewis books are on my ottoman just waiting for me to come and dive into them. The fall breezes have found us here in Missouri, too, and the clothes out on the line are about to sail away.

  30. I can't even imagine the scene you describe right now when our weather has been so miserable and fallishh for so long. Don't you love the Jan Karon/Mitford series? Every year when a new one would come out, I would read ALL of the previous books and then finish up with the new one. Best reads of my life; they really capture your heart and make you a part of the family.

  31. I love to have a pile of books on my bedside table, and in the drawers, and on the floor near it. You get the picture - a lot of books. Also, I wanted to tell you that I'm so jealous of the fun Country Living Fair that you are going to. It sounds so wonderful. I know that I got to go to Junk Bonanza so I'm not complaining too much. I bet you will have such a good time. I really wish I could be there with you. Wouldn't that be fun. I think it sounds lovely.

  33. Jenn,
Just went to the library yesterday and found a few that I'll end up buying at Book-A-$$$$. I try to "test" library books, then when I fall in love, I have to have my own... Have all the Mitford books, and as Beth said, looking forward to the series of Father Tim books that begin soon!

  34. I would start with "The Memory Keeper's Daughter," because I recently finished it myself, and really liked it a lot. It is well-written and real. Then again, if some of the others aren't sure bets, maybe you should save it in case you start reading something that turns out to be a dud, and you want to re-start with something more worthwhile!

  35. My night stand is carrying just as heavy a load. It's time to start reading from the pile!
