Meet Millie

This is Millie. Some people think she's a dog. She's really not. All it takes is one look into those eyes to realize that. She came to live with us when she was 1. This was 4 months after we lost our first Golden that we had for 14 1/2 years. I swore I wouldn't get another dog, but really how could I say no to this face?

We found her through petfinder at a shelter about 1 1/2 hours north of us. Her original owner died of cancer and her daughter and son-in-law ended up with Millie. They didn't have time for her and took her to the shelter. It turned out her original owner lived in our town and her vet was just down the road from us. I feel sure that she was meant to be ours.

I adore this dog that I didn't even know I wanted. I thought no dog could ever compare with the dog I lost. Millie has proven me wrong and continues to do so on a daily basis. She has even tamed Sweet Hubby who insists that she sleep in our bed every night. Is there anything larger than a king size bed?

A few facts about Millie:

1) Her best friend's name is Emma

2) She loves to go for walks but will stop and refuse to go any further if it is too hot outside

3) She loves to play dress up (see picture 4)

4) She loves peanut butter and carrots, not usually together but she's not picky

5) She is ball obsessed and will push one of those big inflatable balls from Target all over the yard until she manages to pop it. She also has a small squeaky yellow ball that her Daddy throws for every night

6) She eats snow. She will run all around the yard scooping up snow as she goes (see picture 3)

7) If you don't pay enough attention to her she will quietly go bellyup (see picture 2) until you come rub her belly

8) She loves to talk

9) We call her leaner dog because she will come and lean her head on you when she feels particularly content

10) She loves us more than you can imagine and we love her twice as much as that

  3. Oh my -- she is so sweet! I have two goldens and a border collie rescue... there is nothing in this world that ever could have prepared me for how much I love those dogs... so I know just what you mean! BTW -- love your blog!

  4. What a precious "child". I'm glad to know that another couple can be as smitten with their "child" as I! I, too, have a second "child"--didn't think any could replace our Sadie, who we adored. Didn't even want another--and then a friend of my daughter gave us the old "sob tale (tail?)"--and now we have Abby, a 4 year old Corgi who came to live with us a year ago. Being the cat person I am, I am shocked at how in love I am (and was) with these two "kids"!!! Thanks for the pictures. Now I'm inspired to tell about mine, so check back & I'll get to it sooner or later!!!

  5. Hello there. I have just recently found your blog, and I have added you to my Back Porch Blogs. Millie is beautiful. We have a yellow Lab. Millie was one of the names on our list, but she is our Maggie. So many things you said about Millie applies to Maggie. come by some time for a visit, and meet my furbaby.
    Hugs,
    Rebecca

  7. Oh my goodness, girl, I loved this post! As you know, we share our home with a Golden Goddess name Zoe. My, how these lovelies take over the home and the heart! I enjoyed the Millie "list"! And the photo of her in the snow is priceless. We had a Golden named Drake years ago who loved the snow, too. What a total doll Millie is. Don't you love how quietly stubborn Goldens are? Y'all are so lucky to have found each other! Keep the photos of her coming!

  10. When our Charlie (ShihTzu) died of cancer after pulling me through MY cancer, I too thought I'd never put my heart out there to feel the pain I was feeling - that thought lasted about 6 weeks before Braxton (ShihTzu) and his housemate Lulu(Tibetan Spaniel)found us through Pet Finder. I will always love and miss Charlie, but I think he's watching from above and telling Braxton & Lulu just how to train us! Your Millie is a love. She's so lucky to have you!

  22. Aren't Goldens the Best? Ben, our golden was left as a puppy in a box on the front porch of my son's fraternity house. I guess whoever did it figured those guys would make a home for the dog. My son brought the puppy home to us and it was love at first sight. Whenever Ben wants to go outside he comes and lays his big head in my lap. He definitely is our Big Baby. ~ Smiles ~ Lynn

  29. Oh she's gorgeous! She sounds like a really lovely dog. It's funny how pets have a way of making you love them when you thought you didn't even want them. When my Mum and Dad lost their last cat they said they would never have another. Until a friend of a friend told them about a cat who's owner had just died and who needed a good home. Smokey has been with them ever since and totally rules the roost! On top of that they also have four strays who live in the summer house and are fed a constant buffet by the back door!

  39. Hi Jen, can I bring my dog Conan to meet your princess Millie? He is also a Golden Retriever and he looks very much like Millie; he’s never been married, although I think he might had a girlfriend or two years ago when he use to escape at night and come back early in the morning... he is a good wholesome guy now… no kids that I know of... :)

    Love,
