Where a Kid Can Be a Kid

One of Miss Emma's favorite new things to play is Library. She goes through a lot of trouble to make sure the experience feels real for you. Right down to making you a personalized library card and hanging a sign that says "No food or drink". Do you remember when your imagination soared like that? She inspires me to get in touch with my inner kid and to rediscover my creativity.

  1. Kids are the best!! My daughter plays the same library game - types up little labels for the book spines - makes you a library card - creates Story time for the youngsters in all age groups. It's wonderful to see the details she's picked up over the years...and inspires me to notice those details too.

  3. Be happy she is still in that mode. I was talking on the phone today to a fellow blogger discussing the kids who always have something like a cell phone (talking or text messaging) or some sort of mechanism in their hand and not using their imagination. Creativity is real intellect.

  6. I agree, Brenda Kula. We only just got a TV a few months ago (Rosie said she felt TOO different from the other kids at school) but we still only use it sparingly. The kids get to watch the cartoons on Saturday morning and Dr Who on Sunday night. No TV during the week, unless it's something special. My friend said her kids love playing with mine because they are always outside or being creative and imaginative and I think it's because they have to be to entertain themselves. I know if we've been watching too much, because they start to lose that ability, so if that happens, I just ban it for a week or two, and the change is remarkable.

  7. I love the "no food or drink" sign! It always amazes me what kids notice about the places they go.

You had asked about the black granite counters...I do like them. However, I will admit that they show water marks really bad. As to the wood floors in the family room: LOVE THEM! It is so much easier to keep them clean. The best part is the stairs are wood also.

Hope you fared well with all of the bad weather over the weekend.

  12. My kids are just like that. When they discovered posties they went crazy. I find notes everywhere. By the way what color pink are those walls? I'm doing my room pink and yours are pretty. Wendy

  13. My Ellen has been doing a similar thing with a post office...with a pretty clever mail notification system. I have a feeling if we put Emma and Ellen together they could run a business.

  14. Cute Story! Just the other day I walked in to my 3 year olds room to find her sitting in her rocking chair reading a book to all of her stuffed animals who were lined up on the floor in a semi-circle. She is really in to imitating story hour at the library and preschool reading time.

  16. Such a cute post Jen. Gracie has the same chalkboard that she uses while 'teaching' her stuffed animals.

  17. I love it when my little one comes home "copying" her teacher. Today she wanted to know why all the teachers were called "Miss" so-in-so!

Seems like yesterday, when the kids played school...and the favorite toy was the "dress up box" filled with Imagination and spunk!!

  20. Love it...I used to pretend to deliver mail to my grandfather. This mail'girl' would carry the mail (junk mail) on the exercise bike and about every five minutes give Papaw the mail. He would have a 'pretend mailman/customer' conversation with me...and he NEVER tired of it. A place where kids feel you are part of their imagination is one where they grow up to be better adults. Kudos to you!

  21. I remember! We used to play office! Creating logos and magazines and stationary of our very own! Making it real is very important :)
