Autumn in the Village

I went 5 whole posts without saying the word Village. Are you amazed? Are you as excited as I am that the streak is broken? So. This Village thing is pretty much consuming our thoughts these days. We're considering some options which, depending on the housing market and our ability to save our pennies may have us putting our house on the market this coming Spring and might have us renting a house there for 6 months or a year so that we can finish saving up a healthy down payment. I'm sure that sounds insane to most of you (and feel free to tell me that) but it's possible we've gone insane. Insane with happiness and excitement. Insane with the pleasure of making our dreams come true.

I thought I'd share this little tour of our Village from last Saturday when we went house hunting. I think you will see why we fell in love. We're headed back there today for coffee and to see another house.

Did you notice those trees? We don't have many of those in the suburbs. Not anything you could actually climb. Hope I didn't bore you too much. I'll be back soon. Have you noticed that I have a lot to say lately? Hope your day is filled with dreams big and small.

  5. how wonderful, I happen to live in a place just like that. My little village has only 312 people and 125 old antebellum houses... how wonderful. And your not crazy to want to make your dreams happen but just remember if its meant to happen, it'll happen. You don't have to rush. Good good , great luck- Sarahlynn PLEASE POST MORE!

  7. It's all so beautiful. Please DO continue sharing everything "Village" - I'd love to see and hear more about it.

My 2 cents? Saving pennies is tough, but I agree with your healthy down payment plan. I'm saving pennies to put down a wood floor in our tiny new home, so you're not alone in the savings department! :)

Yours is the first post I read this morning, and it's put a smile on my face.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  9. please...you can go on and on about living in the village and I will never tire. I love the whole idea and could enjoy that same experience. I live in a small town in California, with some old buildings with great history, and I love it, but sometimes imagine what it would be like to live in a place that a lot of old buildings & homes with tons of charm. ahhhh, jules

  12. Hi Jen, So happy to see that you stopped by - I've loved your blog! The village is beautiful and it's terribly exciting to be looking for a home there. Looking at houses is one of my favorite things to do - houses are like artwork, each have their own unique beauty! Trina

  13. What a beautiful place!! I can see why you would want to live there. That would be so awesome to live in a beautiful older home in the city! I hope you can get there soon!

And I do not think that you are crazy at all to want to sell your house and rent a place in your dream city. My husband and I did the same kind of thing a few years ago. We left our old hometown to go live four hours away from all of our family and friends. And we had to sell our house and rent an apartment for a year to do it! But we are so happy that we took the plunge and moved to where we really wanted to be! I am so excited for you guys!! :)

  14. I don't think your crazy at all. Sometime you have to take a leap of faith and then everything else will fall in place. Put your house on the market and then rent until the right house comes along. Make up your mind that you'll wait for exactly the right one for you! You'll be surprise how everything will fall into place. Its happen to me every time. Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen!!!

  15. Such a charming, warmly beautiful place that just "feels like home". I don't think you're a bit crazy. In my extremely humble opinion anyone who wouldn't want to live there may be just a little crazy themselves! Best of luck!!!

  26. This is a charming village. I've been traveling the Heartland for a book about farmers markets, and every week I return to Chicago and tell my husband "pack your bags, honey, we're moving to . . ." And I fill in the blank with Stillwater, Minnesota or Hudson, Ohio and so on. This past weekend it was Winterset, Iowa. Let me join the throngs crying for the name of your village -- I want to see it in person!

  28. The village is so lovely. I'm from Chicago but moved to Wisconsin 15 years ago and though a big change as well as missing the big city, it's not until I go about taking photos that I realize how wonderful it is to live in a smaller town. I'm also on a saving plan to move along in a few years. Thanks for sharing such a cozy "make me dream" moment...

    P.S. Love this blog...
