Village Life - Month 6

Here we are in our 6th month in the Village. It has flown by. Of course an amazing number of things have happened in these months. We are halfway through our first year and even more importantly, we are halfway through our lease! I get giddy just thinking about it. Happily, it looks like our finances will allow us to buy a house soon and not have to stay here a second year. Hallelujah and Amen!

The thought of getting out of here sooner rather than later will be enough to keep me warm these winter months. Or not. As I sit here typing this I am wearing jeans, knee highs, fuzzy boots, a tank top, a long sleeve t-shirt, a long sleeve sweater and a scarf. For reals. And you know what? I'm cold. You know what else? It's all worth it.

Late yesterday afternoon Emma and I walked through the snow to our new dentist's office. On the way back we stopped at our favorite gourmet shop that is housed in a sweet little cottage to celebrate no cavities with a chocolate chip scone. They love her there. She loves them. They hug her and call her by name and occasionally offer her free scones. She's been told she has a job there when she's old enough. Her artwork even graces the window. This is what life in the Village is like.

This morning it was still snowing. Millie and I walked Emma to school and then I met my buddy Sarah at the coffee shop followed by knitting class at the yarn shop. Afterward I walked over and picked up my dry cleaning and then stopped to chat with a neighbor who was walking her dog on Main Street. Then I slowly made my way home as the snowflakes fell upon my shoulders and with every step of my feet I felt overwhelmed with gratitude for this life I find myself living.

I live in a Norman Rockwell painting. I wouldn't blame any of you if you thought it didn't sound real. It doesn't sound real to me either. Yet I am living it and falling more in love with it each and every day.

  2. i can feel your joy and i can say i know what you mean. even though i am not in a quaint village, i really love my town -- being a "regular" at the local cafe, knowing the librarian, post office workers, etc. -- it's a warm feeling of community. snow always adds a little extra magic, too ...

    happy for you!

  6. Jen, your little village is fantastic! I would love to know where this little gem is so I can visit one day. I am quite a 'roadtrip' girl, you know! Anyplace this cute has to be at the top of my list of stops when I am passing through sometime!

So happy you enjoy it the way you do!

  10. Okay, that's it. I'm calling you Lorelai from now on. And Emma is hereby Rory.
    Can I be your Sookie?
My only other option is Kirk, and I refuse to go there.
    Okay, I'm done now.
Oh wait, I have an idea....let's open an Inn!
    The Bee Hive!
    Now there's a plan.

  12. Jen,

You are so fortunate to be able to "live your dream"! It sounds like such a charming village.

The cold house? Well I share your pain (or should I say chills). My little house was built in 1920 and it is drafty and chilly. Wool slippers, sock, fleece and sometimes a down vest are the norm! When we're watching TV there's usually a blanket involved. But I wouldn't trade it for anything!

Enjoy your holidays in your village!
    Chris

  13. Oh- I want to move there and be your neighbor. It does sound like a dream life and I'm sure you must wake up and, just for a moment, wonder if you have dreamed it all. God is smiling on you...you are so blessed! Hugs- Diana

  22. I love when you find where you ARE to BE. And you are 'being' so well there JenJen. Be well - there. I could go on. I feel all pondery today. Hormones? Too many lattes? Christmas spirit? Me thinks it's all the above. I'm just so glad to know ya.

  23. Sounds wonderful. I live 6 miles south of a cute little town, but no knitting classes or coffee shop. It still is the best place on Earth to me.
So happy for you. It is great to watch God's most wonderful plans unfold!

  32. Hi Jen,

I've been following your blog for a while now. I have really enjoyed your posts bout your decision to follow your dream and live in the wonderful village. My little family lives 10 min north of your village. We have been walking it's streets for years, and really enjoy the holiday festivities there. Ever since discovering your blog, I now have a little seed planted in my mind. Would it be possible for us to live in the village? You have helped me see things a bit differently. My husband and I even spent one afternoon driving by houses to see if they had for rent signs out. Thank you for sharing, and I am so happy for you and your family!
