Getting Horizontal

I have a deep love for shiplap or horizontal wood walls.

I think they have lots of character and add tons of charm. Typically I like the boards wide. The wider the better.

Also, they hide a multitude of sins. We have a lot of sins in this house.

We have decided to try this technique inside the studio closet which currently is nothing but studs. And since we are terrible at drywall, and this is a diy level project, it seems like a good choice.

This will be our practice room because we also hope to do it in our master bathroom and in the mudroom.

I find it best to always practice in a less conspicuous place. We are getting started soon so if any of you have successfully attempted to get horizontal, I would love some tips.

  1. Good Plan - always test it out where it's less obvious! I'm sure it will look great though. I also love the horizontal plank.
Our house has a bunch of vertical orange-stained wood plank that I plan to paint out white. I will admit that I do wish it was hung horizontally.
Looking forward to seeing your project!

  3. Can't wait to see how this turns out! We have horizontal plank (or shiplap) under our walls. The original planks are covered with a fabric like product, like really heavy wall paper and then were painted many times.... I've tried to convince my husband to remove it and go with the planking but he thinks I'm crazy! I do love the look but I guess he lives here too :/

Enjoying seeing your little home come together...

  5. We bought the unfinished pine tongue-and-groove planks from Lowes. Super inexpensive, very easy (from what Cory says) and you can paint it whatever you like!

  8. Such beautiful rooms! We have a 200 year old farmhouse with a multitude of sins as well. :) We would like to do some wood planks on our ceiling someday. Especially in our upstairs bedrooms that are peaked.

  14. I have been eyeing the horizontal planks and would love to put them in my bedroom, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I think I'm just chicken to do it. Good luck and I'll be anxious to see how it works for you!!

  15. Jen Jen! I bet you forgot I even lived! I've been so quiet of late - I LOVE the horizontal walls. I have to say, before the pics downloaded, and I just read your blog title, I thought it was going to be something about resting...lol...when I wake up in the morning, I always say 'time to get vertical'. : -)

  18. We actually replaced the vertical pine siding on our house, so we cut it down to 4 inch boards, turned them over to the unfinished back side and did a complete horizontal wall of natural pine in our living room. I love repurposing!
