I Needed That

Well, it felt good to sit down this morning and click that New Post button. That was a long break. I'm betting, by far the longest I've ever taken. I enjoyed every moment. There may be more of that in my future. I got several emails and comments from readers wanting to know if I was okay. I was better than okay! I found myself unplugging from technology for the last month and plugging into life. It's been wonderful. I want more!

Since we last met, our home became waterfront property for a day during the floods, I had a bad bout of the flu, traveled to Virginia, read a whole book, booked our summer vacation, paid off a large debt, welcomed spring, bought a spur of the moment but necessary car, drank several margaritas, filled trash can after trash can with weeds and debris from my yard, made curtains for the studio, spent lots of time with friends and have made walking part of my regular routine. That was a wise way to spend a month, wouldn't you say?

Right now I'm in a nesting mood and feel a deep urge to go one room at a time, cleaning and organizing from top to bottom. Last night I had a dream that I filled my car with stuff from the house and drove it to a donation center. It was a very satisfying dream. If I disappear again, know that I'm here washing windows and alphabetizing my spices. And know that I am well. I am just feeling an urge to keep my world small right now and to not let the demands of life overwhelm me any more than I have to. Also know I do miss this little space and all of you too and I've no intention of giving up blogging.

So that's what I've been up to. What have you been up to? I'd love to hear!

  1. I've been doing the same thing! I did just fill the back of my car and take it to the donation center. It's such a good feeling to remove some items from our home. I'll be continuing the process with you. :)

  2. I always enjoy your posts, but am happy to hear also that you took a very productive break! The waterfront property comment cracked me up, only because what else can you do but laugh at it. I hope there wasn't any damage to your home or property.

  4. Hopefully, your waters have receded. Most of ours have, although the rivers are still high. I find myself wondering and worrying if all the rain now means summer will be miserably dry again.

Amen to the satisfying power of cleaning and purging. We've been on a give it away, sell it, or toss it cleaning spree for the past week. At night I curl up on our couch with a book and soak in the calmness of less things. It's amazing what a difference it can make.

  8. I remember when school was cancelled for that flood, I was thinking, "Why is school cancelled?" I looked out my window, and it was completely fine. My area wasn't really affected by the water; I guess it doesn't have such a low elevation.

  9. Sometimes a break ( even from something you love ) can breath new life into the ordinary so that the ordinary becomes extra-ordinary. Glad you took a break - sounds like you're refreshed!

  14. I enjoy hearing of your month with satisfying tasks and no technology. I recently moved into my dream house and have taken the last 3 weeks off of the computer. I also began a nesting process which has carried over into a relaxing routine without the necessity of constant technology. Once we step away from it we realize it really does not add much value to our lives overall. I use it only once a day now and do not miss it. You had a break well deserved. Congrats on donation of unused items. I make that a personal habit of anything unused to a senior thrift store to fund food for seniors. Well done

  15. I'm so glad that you've had such a good break...it is nice and necessary to do so. (Me too...although my break was mainly due to spending online time looking at rental properties!) Missed you here though! And I love those dishtowels!

  20. Thanks for visiting Pinehurst Cottage. I envy your lovely break. You've been very productive. I find taking a break from time to time enables me to regroup. I then am able to focus and prioritize. It's been wonderful... in fact a dream come true to renovate this little cottage. Although...an unexpected job transfer has mixed things up a bit. We'll be relocating very shortly and two of my children are graduating from high school and college this month. Life is never boring! I hope you make it back to Pinehurst soon. Please make it a point to stop by the cottage. I'd love to meet you and show you around. ~Amy
