And Now a Word About Procrastination

I am a procrastinator. I do not want to be a procrastinator. I'm not sure how to change this about myself. I have had the idea to slipcover this old round ottoman (you can see what it looked like before here) with an Anthropologie shower curtain that I've had for ages. I use this ottoman at my vanity and it's perfect for sitting on cross legged while I get ready. I have no idea why this is important to me but it is. Over the years it has taken quite the beating and was the one thing that bothered me about my vanity area which happens to be the first thing you see when you walk into my room.

So you'd think I'd be super motivated to get that project done, right? It's literally been on my to do list for years. I think I was just a wee bit overwhelmed about how to do it but then this past week I just forced myself to start. Then once I started, I figured if I was doing one, it wasn't really any harder to do two. The hard part is figuring out the first one. After that it's a breeze. I find all projects to be that way.

And then before I knew it I was done! I was filled with such feelings of relief and accomplishment. Like I do every.single.time. I do a project I have been procrastinating about! And of course I told myself I will not procrastinate any more. Because that also is part of my process.

Now I have a slipcovered ottoman at my vanity area (which I will share with you very soon) and I have this extra ottoman that I switched a chair for in my studio because we've already covered how much I love to sit cross legged while I'm working and it has the added benefit of being able to be pulled over to my cozy studio chair as needed.

I have been enjoying starting my mornings in this spot. Usually with my planner, a notebook and a copy of Bella Grace magazine which I am finally carving the time out to enjoy. I usually have 40's music playing softly in the background or sometimes classical or Paris cafe music and always a chai latte.

This is such a calm, peaceful way to start my day.  It sometimes is very difficult to leave but since it is summer and our schedule is very relaxed I find myself taking advantage of it as much as possible and it seems I am not the only one who is drawn here in the mornings.

It's so important to find a little space in your life to take care of yourself, whatever that looks like for you. For me, right now, that means sitting in a quiet place listening to my heart and nurturing myself. I'm slowly starting to learn that as a giver, I can't give what I need to everyone else if I don't first give to myself.

  1. I wanted to make a slipcover for an ottoman we had in the attic and like you, it was on the To Do list for over a year. Like you, I wasn't sure how to tackle it, but I finally did and it turned out great.

    Have a lovely, relaxing day.

  4. Hi Jen,
The ottoman covers turned out beautifully and that fabric is gorgeous, love the color!
You have such a great spot to sit each morning and I agree with you 100% that it is so important to take time to take care of your self!

  5. I love your closing words. I have finally stopped worrying about everyone and now focus on what I need and want.

I'm very much the same with procrastinating...mostly on projects such as purging clothes and whatnot as well organizing spaces. I do have a few creative projects in mind but I'm saving them for a rainy day. To motivate myself I gather all my supplies and tools and plunk everything down in front of my favorite chair in the den. I can't take looking at it so I get to work!

I love your ottoman, the fabric is so pretty. I notice the pretty florals and colors all around your home and it says a lot about the gentle soul you are who enjoys a quiet morning reflecting, reading, enjoying your tea and kitty!

    Happy Weekend, Jen!

  6. Hello my name is Anna and I'm a procrastinator. It has taken me some time but I have learned to be happy with that as I have found my finished projects are better for it. Your ottoman looks ever so pretty and I think your end-result justified the pondering time! I couldn't agree with you more ....time spend on oneself is time spend wisely.... especially in such a beautiful setting as yours! Looking through your lovely photos I have ended up with a bit of notebook envy! Jen, have a beautiful weekend!

  9. I *love* the ottomans! Gorgeous fabric & the ruffle! Yes, I've found that the worst part of anything is the starting. Once you are going, it all seems to flow from there.

  10. Great ottomans! Making slip covers intimidates me a little. Your mornings sound wonderful. I try to spend a little quiet time each morning with my morning meditations and readings. This a luxury I don't have during the school year. Have a fabulous week-end. Bonnie

  13. They turned out really lovely! Don't beat yourself up, a lot of us creative folk do the exact thing...LOL Let's call it part of the creative process. :) I have been wanting to prune my boxwood for years! Scared. But I finally did it last Sunday. And I must say it turned out pretty good. Enjoy your morns. :) Kit

  14. Ok, so you named three of my all time favorite genres of music for when I am having some relaxing time - 40's, French Café, or classical - I even have my younger daughter hooked on the first two!! Kindred spirits...I knew it!

  15. Your ottoman is simply delightful! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! Jen, what a wonderful way to start your day. In my perfect world, I would of course be your next door neighbor and would every now and then drop over (in my cute pjs) to have a cup of coffee (bringing my own since you don't drink coffee) and just sit and listen to your divine music. Talking not always required...unless of course we were planning a day out and about in the village. Ahh, I really like my perfect world!

  17. Months late (I had a baby just after you posted this and am catching up on blog reading today!) but I wanted to say that a) these slipcovers look amazing; b) I am glad you procrastinate, too, and; c) I would love a post about your music playlists some day because 40s and Parisian cafe music sound fabulous, but ever since Songza died (RIP) I haven't found another good French station I like.

    Hope you're staying cozy!
