Birthday Musings

I am the new face of 36. This is something I have been saying about myself for several years now on my birthday (adjusting the age, of course). I say it to remind me, and everyone around me, that your age is truly what you make it. That I can choose to be anything I want at any age. I can choose to resent getting older or I can embrace it and be grateful for the experiences I have had and the lessons I have learned so far in life that have made me the person I am.

Certainly I am older than I once was, but I am also smarter. Certainly my body is different than it once was, but I am much more comfortable with it now, imperfections and all. Certainly I have to work harder to do some things, but I also value things more that I have to work for.

I prefer to focus on haves than nots. I am admittedly an eternally optimistic person. This bothers some people. I hope it never changes. The other day I told my 13 y.o. dd Maddie that I think 36 is going to be my best year yet. She said that I said that about 35. Well, I was right then & I hope I'll be right this time too.

  1. Happy Birthday Jen! I hope you have a very lovely day.
I'm 36 next time too. I hated turning 35 so I think I need a bit of your optimism!
Love the little cakes by the way. They're very pretty.

  4. Well said. I am one who, like you, is not afraid of doing what we're supposed to with birthdays - celebrating! We have such a backwards culture that fears aging, and frankly, I've never understood it. There's so much to be gained from going through time and learning from life. And, there are so many people in the world who are sick and would love more time. So how can we not celebrate our biggest personal milestone every year. We are so lucky to have one!

  5. Happy Birthday Jen! I love this quote from Sophia Loren “There is a fountain of youth: It is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring in your life and the lives of people you love” So true.
