Emma's Room- A Work In Progress

I thought I'd share some pictures of Emma's work in progress so you guys will know that I'm keeping my promise and working on one room at a time. Don't you love her new hanging light fixture? I went shopping in my basement for that one. That's the same place I found this peg rack that I painted and hung above her (still) unpainted bookshelves. I'm actually having a paint crisis because I'm not loving the white paint that I used and I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a good white to use on furniture and share what finish (eggshell, semigloss, etc.) that you prefer. I absolutely despise painting furniture, which is a shame since there is so much of it sitting around waiting to be painted. I'd like to get it right the first time.

New bedding is on the way, furniture should be painted in the next 2 weeks, new shelf installed above her closet, art work completed & hung and then it's on to another room. Deciding which one is the hard part. I know one thing for sure, it will be a room that someone over the age of 7 will actually see.

  1. Oh, crazy getting to be the first one commenting! I love your blog! It's very inspiring for this first time home owner who is totally intimated to decorate a whole house! And Emma's room is looking very cute!

Such a talented gal like yourself will have to take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I painted my farm house kitchen chairs and I am now painting my grandfather's old hutch using General Finishes Milk Paint in the color of antique white. For the hutch I first used an off white primer that has really helped. I love the outcome. It will be nice to read the advice everyone else gives you. Good luck! Look forward to the finished results!

  3. Emma's room looks like it is off to the perfect start. Can't wait to see the finished product!

I know what you mean about painting furniture. I have two pieces that I want to paint but just can't seem to get myself moving in that direction. Furniture painting is so time consuming.

  4. I use Benjamin Moore Aqua Pearl, satin finish, in White Dove when I paint furniture and I love the way it turns out.

  5. I love the pegs that you're using to hang things on. Very nice.

I've got a buffet to paint but I'm dragging my feet.

  6. Looks so gorgeous. I have questions! Is that fixture hardwired? If not what did you do with the cord? And I do love the pegs. Did you find them local? I was just about to order some from Land of Nod, but if I can avoid shipping, good deal. I second Benjamin Moore Dove White and they have a paint that has an oil-based finish with a latex-like clean up. It's great for furniture. I highly recommend Everyday Paint & Wallpaper in Nora. :) Alicia

  8. I always use Behr Swiss Coffee. It is a nice, creamy white.

  9. Hi, Jen!
I've been loving all the gorgeous inspiration you give! So I hope it helps to share my own favorite white: Sherman William's "Flower White." (I actually use Behr paint tinted to this color.) I'm really picky about color and love the look of white trim, but hate when it gets a grey or icky cast next to certain colors. This is a creamy white that looks fresh and clean, and goes perfect with any wall color I've thrown it next to, whether it's got a cool or warm cast. Good luck with the painting and I'm looking forward to seeing what your basement will look like!

  11. How fun to shop in your own basement. I always wanted a basement. We don't have them in California.
I always use Behr off white in semi gloss for furniture. I sand a little and prime first. Sometimes I use a little glaze if I want an antique look.
It's looking good so far. Can't wait to see it all done.

  12. creamy white by Glidden or ralph lauren is lovely as is antique white. if you plan on making it shabby chicish or antique looking it allows room for error and after the sanding it is a beautiful color.

  15. Love that color in her room!
And I love that hanging light.
I see you have that little American Girl bakery -- that is one of my daughter's favorite toys. She can play with it for hours, serving sweets and pretending to bake them. It's so cute.
Love the room. I'm interesting in hearing the answers for paint for furniture too because I have a bunch of things to tackle myself.

  19. Love the room, it looks adorable. Whenever I paint anything white, whatever is underneath seeps through, do I always have to primer first? Do you ever use a "deglosser"?

  22. The room looks fab and paint wise you can't beat any of the Farrow & Ball whites, the oil eggshell goes on like a dream and is hardwearing. They only use pigments in their paints which gives the paint a beautiful depth to the colour. Fab Blog love reading it Rachellex

  23. Love the pink walls! What is the color of pink that you used? I thinking of switching out my daughter's wall color from her "nursery" yellow to something more pink and fun! But I struggle with finding the right color of 'pale pink'... -Amy

  24. I am painting my daughter's furniture soon and am going to use Benjamin Moore's Aqua Pearl and use Cloud White. The Aqua Pearl finish is "one down" from Melamine paint in durability. It doesn't have the odour of melamine though. I love your daughter's room! It is going to be very cute.

  28. First time I've ever posted, but I couldn't resist. I just painted over wood cabinetry WITHOUT sanding or priming! There's a great product out there called "Krylon cabinet and trim" paint in satin super white. My cabinets are gorgeous and I couldn't be happier. Good luck!

  30. I'm a fan of Benjamin Moore White Dove. I've used it on all my trim, and on various other projects. I could make that sort of decision on my own, so I had to ask my lcoal paint store to ~ just tell me what white to get! ~ and he didn't steer me wrong!
