A Queen or a King? This has been our debate lately. We upgraded to a king 7 years ago and never looked back. Or so I thought.
With this move our sleeping arrangements are being downsized. This pleases Sweet Hubby to no end. He thinks a queen bed is better for a marriage. I think that since we mostly sleep in a queen size area of the bed all snuggled up together that a king is just as good. Plus I need space to sleep with my legs in a figure 4 with one knee sticking out without being fussed at. I think that is good for a marriage.
Plus we have 2 cats and a dog who's feelings need to be considered. Plus we like to pile into our bed and have family hang out time.
Right now, because of the size of the bedroom, my choice is being made for me.
Before I invest too much money in queen size bedding, I'm trying to decide if I can make this change permanent. This topic made me curious about your choice and if you're happy with it. I mean your bed not your husband. That's a post for another day.
We have a king size bed, and if there was such a thing as an "emperor" size, I would want that! I am a very light sleeper and cannot sleep with anyone or animal touching me. And a well-rested me is better for our marriage than a queen size bed!
ReplyDeleteWe have been married for 27 years and have always had a queen bed until this past December we upgraded to a king size and we love it. You get the option of getting your own space or cuddling and we always have dogs in bed with us so a king works plus hubby is 6' 4".
ReplyDeleteWe've had a King bed for about 5 years now, and I can't imagine going back to a smaller size. I flop and flail around a lot in the night, and need lots of room to stretch out. Even though we do end up snuggled up in the middle of the bed quite a bit, it is nice to be able to get clear over on your side of the bed and stretch out when you want to.
ReplyDeleteWe have slept on a queen size air mattress, though, and we both sleep just fine. As long as I have my husband by my side, I think I can sleep just about anywhere. :)
Hope you have a great day! Beth.
Well unfortunately I can't help you out too much in this situation because I sleep in just a full size bed with just my 2 little pint size dogs. But is there that much difference in size actually from a king to a queen?Since you already have a king size are you sure there is no way it can work in your new bedroom.Down sizing does mean more snuggling which would mean warmer on a cold cold night.Good luck on what ever you decide.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE our King!! It is heaven.
ReplyDeleteSince we only have a full/double, a queen would be a step up! Then again, we don't have dogs or kids to account for, either!
ReplyDeleteWe tend to get King rooms when we travel and find it's almost too much space. I like it in theory, but I have to sleep with one foot hanging over the edge of the mattress so it's totally lost on me.
We have a queen and Nick sometimes says he wants to move just so we can have a bigger master to fit a king. I wouldn't miss this queen either.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby said the same thing - a king size bed is too big and he would prefer a smaller bed so we could sleep closer together.... That being said - I have RLS so I move my legs alot at night and and a small dog that can't figure out why hubby is in his bed and really - how far apart are we that we can't find each other..... So I think we're keeping the king...at least for now....
ReplyDeleteHmm we love our queen size bed. I think it is pretty roomy and our daughter often cuddles there in the morning when she wakes up too. But we are both smaller people too. As a bonus nice bedding is a lot more affordable for a queen bed. I love all these pictures by the way, the panelling is my favourite!
ReplyDeleteTake care,
Janice
Hi Jen :)
ReplyDeleteWell, lets see.... With my ex husband I went from a King to a Queen and ended up in divorce, but with Rich we had a King and we downsized to a Queen and we couldn't be happier.
In other words it's the man, not the bed that makes for a happy marriage...errr.... sleep. So if you are happy then the bed won't matter... am I making sense or am I just talking nonsense? Probably the latter LOL
I do know one thing though... those bedrooms make me want to paint my walls off-white in our room ;)
xoxo,
rue
Oh - Queen wins hands down for me - we have a huge bedroom but still I prefer the queen - there is lots of room to stretch out. Mind you - nobody gets on our bed except the two of us - well maybe a quick cuddle from the boy but he's 14 now so that is a rare occurrence - certainly the cat never gets on there or she'd be skinned alive by the hubby!
ReplyDeleteWe have a queen because our bedroom is so tiny. And we really can't invest in a new bed at the moment. But, we would love a king. My husband is just under 6'5" and I am 5'9" - I'd like more room. We love to cuddle but sometimes we need space.
ReplyDeleteI am a light sleeper, too, so there is that!
I think the mattress makes more of a difference than the size of the bed. On our last queen sized regular mattress it was pretty crowded and horrible. Then we bought a foam mattress (also a queen) and hallelujah! it's perfect. (You dont really need to flop around all night on those foam things.)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, LOVE our king. As someone else said, if there were an "emperor" size, we would have that. Don't get me wrong--we still snuggle a lot before bed (while watching TV, talking, etc.) but once it's sleep time, we both need our space. Hubby rolls/moves around lots in his sleep and I get really hot if someone is close to me and breathing all my air (haha). Plus, our dogs sleep up there sometimes, and they are no small ones. But even without them, I don't think I could ever go back to a queen.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree w/Sarah and Jack about the mattress quality being very important - we've gone foam and can't imagine how we slept on anything else.
ReplyDeleteI love our queen bed - I've always harbored a dislike for king size mattresses because they remind me of hotel rooms and 70's gangster movies. The imagery isn't very romantic. That said, I think a person should be comfy at night, so I would let that make my decision.
my husband
ReplyDeleteand i share
a full size
bed. our
room is tiny
so that is
our best
option.
btw - it
is great
for our
marriage!
:)
I'm a figure 4 sleeper too (with 2 cats too)...there is simply no way you'll be able to convert to a queen permanently. Find some cute (cheap) queen size vintage sheets until you are back into the king.
ReplyDeleteWe do queen. I'm a "4 sleeper" too, I always thought of it as "flamingo position". It works for us because we like each other a lot and don't have pets to share space with. We think the king-size would just be wasted on us.
ReplyDeleteIm a kinger! I love my space... plus we have a baby hangin with us as of late! Love all those room pics!
ReplyDeleteXO
SHS
you are a riot!!
ReplyDeletewe have a queen
my hubby is 6'4"
& i like my space while i'm sleeping
also a 4 girl with one leg out too
&
we are living in complete peace & harmony
but
having said that
i have never had a king size bed...so downsizing might be a bit tricky
but for the sake of true cottage living, i feel YOu can overcome!
xo
We have a california king, which is 6 inches narrower and 6 inches longer that a standard king. This allows it to fit in our smaller bedroom space, and gives room on the end for pets. Also, you can scootch way down in the bed and still not hit the end. It's harder to find sheets (but sometimes I hit on bargains at Ross), but I love the size.
ReplyDeleteI have been happily married for 19 years and I say king size bed all the way. Sometimes even a different bed when hubby is snoring:) Good sleep for mama makes for a happy wife!
ReplyDeleteWe made the move to a king after our second daughter was born, our first baby girl spent alot of nights in our queen bed, so we were preparing ourselves. Now that they sleep in their own beds I still love our king, I like my space while I sleep!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how I have missed out on your blog for this long, but no more, I am now happily following. xx
hi jen,
ReplyDeleteafter years of sharing a full mattress, we upgraded to a king. we figured this way on weekends when the boys end up in bed with us, we'd all have room. my complaint is that the bed is too big. it's like: GOODNIGHT, OVER THERE!
i'd vote: queen
keep us posted
xo

I LOVE my king size bed!!!! We are both relatively small but tend to stretch out while sleeping. Now we aren't waking each other up at all hours of the night with jutting arms or stretched out legs (for some reason I like to sleep almost on a diagonal). Even on vacation we always request a room with a king size bed.
ReplyDeleteJen, many years ago my ex and I had a double. I cannot imagine sleeping in a double, now. When I bought my own bed, I bought a queen with a pillow top mattress. I LOVE having a queen. A double is too small. A king is too big. A queen is juuuuussssstttt right. But fun to sleep in a king when I stay in a hotel. :-) hugs, Cheryl
ReplyDeleteWell...a friend and her hubby got a King and they dont touch in bed anymore...literally. She said it was a BIG mistake. Just before that my husband had switched us from a queen to a full bed....we love it. We are so much closer at night...and I love laying there touching while asleep! I dont think that being close at night can hurt ANY marriage..lol
ReplyDeleteWe are king size people all the way. Sharing a queen in a hotel feels so squished! However, I do think a queen bed looks better. But since beds are for sleeping in and not gazing at, it's king for us.
ReplyDeletep.s. Cupcakes, miniature donkeys, and sleeping in the 4 position...kindred spirits, my friend.
We had a queen size bed, sold our condo, moved in with my parents and slept in a king size for 16 months. Moved into our house back into the queen size bed. Within about 3 months we bought another King size bed!! LOL Hubby is a big guy and we DO cuddle but I like to sleep "on my own", lol! King has been good for our marriage that we both sleep good and have lots of ROOM if you know what I mean, ROFL! Did I just say that?? :)
ReplyDeleteAlso I agree with the mattress being most important! We had a tempurpedic and HATED IT. I think we are the only ones in the world. The first night I slept on it I actually cried! So we are back to a regular mattress (which isn't g reat) hope to buy a new one for the new place! :)
Ok...this 4 stuff...on your side/stomach or on your back. I never thought of it as 4...I do it on my side stomach.
ReplyDeleteWe have had a queen this whole time...21 years of marriage 4 kidlets in bed with us at different times. But now...just recently, I find myself fantasizing about a king.
Could be the 185 lb black great dane that has taken to sleeping with us!
We have a queen size bed which is still more room than we need. You see, my hubby thinks the entire bed is his, no matter how big. He will roll to me and I will scoot away, only to end up on the edge of the bed, even in a king. I sleep much better when he travels. Don't spend gobs of money on bedding, though. I use a king size quilt on my queen because it covers the entirety of the mattress and boxsprings, which a queen quilt won't. of course, sheets won't fit, but try your existing bedding first.
ReplyDeleteWe have a queen sized bed & it works fine (our animals do not sleep with us - although, I threaten to let them on very cold winter nights!). However, I was pregnant last year with our first child and I would have done darn near anything for a king at that point. With all the pillows required to make one even slightly comfortable during that most uncomfortable stage - they just didn't all fit in our queen bed! Due to bedroom size constraints though, I think we will have a queen bed for awhile.
ReplyDeletelove those pictures!! especially the beautiful white bed w/ the lilac & white striped bedspread. The paneling on the walls w/ the simple flowers next to the bed is heavenly.
ReplyDeleteWell, we are king all the way over here. I love it & couldn't imagine going back to a queen. I love to stretch (sprawl) out. You can always come together in the middle for snuggling! :)

I'm a longtime lurker, but I had to comment. We had a queen, but I longed for a king after waking up in about 1 square foot of space after hubby, baby and cat had taken up the rest of the bed. We left our apartment for our forever house and happily went mattress shopping. Our bedroom is up a steep and narrow flight of stairs in our 1941 house.....3 king mattresses later (all of which stayed at the bottom of the stairs) we decided to go for a queen rather than demolishing a good bit of the stairway area just to fit the mattress up the stairs. It has worked out fine, now that the cat is no longer, and the babies are big enough to sleep in their own beds, but I still wish for a little extra space now and then.... My point being: live with it for now, but wait and see what your perfect cottage will accept bed-wise (or maybe that will go on your list of features to look for!) You can use king quilts/etc on a queen, so you shouldn't have to break the bank on new bedding. Good luck and sleep well!
ReplyDeletewe had a king size waterbed for many years when we were first married. when we ditched the water for a mattress, we also made the switch to queen. i like it and have never wished we kept the king.
ReplyDeleteCoastal Nest sleeps in a full bed with a very cozy hubby AND most nights a very cozy 5 year old sneeks in and takes her slice right out of the middle.
ReplyDeleteCoastal Nest almost always ends up downstairs on the sofa about time for the 4 am news. Mostly I am happy to have it that way, but sometimes I long for a figure 4, girlfriend..in my dreams, I guess!
Hail to the king!!!
ReplyDeletelove it and it's really not so large that you can't find each other whenever you want...
queen! a king is nice when traveling for a change....but, honestly, we only use half of it. we like the closeness......and we also have 3 furry friends that share our bed off and on through out the night! we are a snuggling family. if i were buying today....queen it would be!
ReplyDeleteAs an Interior Designer, I was trained to specify a queen size bed. It is supposed to be good for the marriage and makes a statement to the children that you are a close family. The bed is supposed to face toward the door to show that you and your husband are head of household and in control. Perception is everything, Ha! My poor husband....he would do anything for a king size bed!
ReplyDeleteMachelle
Ha! I love that so many people have opinions on this subject :) Hubby & I debated this decision for quite awhile when we were first married. We settled on a queen, and even with two cats, and our sweet daughter who snuggles with us in the morning, we've never looked back. I think you'll be surprised by how much room you have, and it looks a bit more charming in a smaller bedroom than a king. Good luck with your decision!
ReplyDeleteJust found your lovely blog...sigh..it makes me so happy...such sweetness everywhere. These images are so lovely...we have a king size bed and love it ...just got all white bedding as well...I really do feel like a queen! Hope your weekend is going well...off to read some of your past posts...I will be back now that I have found you. xo
ReplyDeleteWe moved from a double bed to a "super king" 2 years ago because we didn't want to spend the money on a queen and then have to upsize to a king a few years later.
ReplyDeleteSize wise, I could NEVER go back to anything smaller! Between the two of us, two feline babies and eventual kiddos, there just isn't space! I could already use more! He's a hot, still, sleeper while I prefer to keep cool, away from anyone whilst I toss and turn throughout the night.
Aesthetically, I WISH I could find attractive, properly fitting bedding. That, to me, is the only downfall to the larger size. Mind you, we have the space so we're making use of it!
We have a Cal King! But hubby and I are both really tall (he's 6'5) so we need it!
