Four Zero

40. That's what I am today. It doesn't feel the way I thought it would. I'm not even slightly sad about it. I have a little secret. I'm actually kind of excited. You see I'm a girl that loves fresh starts and somehow a new decade feels sort of, well... big to me, like a great opportunity. A chance to really embrace who I am and make some of my dreams come true. I have this feeling deep inside that my 30's were just the wind up and my 40's will be the grand slam. There is so much to embrace about getting older. Don't get me wrong, there are a few things I could do without.

I have many hopes and dreams for this next decade. I look forward to watching my life unfold and become what it is meant to be. Here are 40 things, in no particular order, that I want to accomplish this year.

1. Worry less.
2. Dream big.
3. Open an Etsy store.
4. Live in the moment.
5. See the beauty in small moments.
6. Make sure the people I love know it.
7. Nag less or maybe even...not at all.
8. Find ways to be creative in every day life.
9. Take classes, lessons and workshops.
10. Eat healthier.
11. Be more playful.
12. Be less serious.
13. Buy a house.
14. Master making scones.
15. Master making cinnamon rolls.
16. If I don't love it or need it, get rid of it.
17. Don't use credit cards.
18. Pay off Sweet Hubby's car.
19. Don't compare myself to others.
20. Don't feel bad about the things I can't change.
21. Be an attentive Mom.
22. Have more date nights.
23. Be a good friend.
24. Put myself first more often.
25. Take tennis lessons.
26. Yoga classes.
27. Buy a good camera.
28. Let go of past hurts.
29. Read more books.
30. Choose joy.
31. Be more patient.
32. Go white water rafting
33. Exercise more.
34. Help others.
35. Love without reservation.
36. Go see a musical.
37. Listen.
38. Save more money.
39. Find more studio time.
40. Embrace the real me.

You are right, certainly not all things are wonderful about getting older but the sense of self, sense of freedom from comparison, sense of what truly matters...priceless!

Does your Etsy store take special orders, because I have an order I'd like to place and I would love nothing more than to have the honor of being your first customer.
Convo me. (I don't really know what that means, but I see it on Etsy all the time. Just trying to talk the talk, ya know.)
    Love you to pieces!

  30. Your list is inspiring! Happy Birthday, Jen! I remember 40 - it was a long while ago - but I always had trouble with the big decade markers. 30, 40, 50...but on the other side? Freedom and exciting new beginnings.

  46. Enjoy your 40s---like the rest of time, they go by far too fast! Here's some help for #14 on your list...I was making these for teacher gifts on my bday # 47 on Dec 22...and have been told by English natives that they are "spot on". The recipe is from my (French Canadian) grandmothers 1941 Women's Home Companion Cookbook...

    Scotch Scones
    2 cups flour
    3 tsp baking soda
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 Tblsp sugar
    1/3 cup shortening
    2 eggs
    about 1/2 cup milk

Sift flour, measure, add baking powder, salt and sugar, sift again.

Cut in shortening with a pastry blender, blending it until the mixture resembles coarse corn meal.

To slightly beaten eggs add enough milk to make 3/4 cup. Add enough of this mixture tot he flour-fat mixture to make a soft dough, stirring it in with a fork: continue stirring until all of the flour disappears.

Turn out on lightly floured board: knead lightly for about 1/2 minute. Pat or roll our about 1/2 inch thick; cut into 4 inch squares: cut each diagonally in half to make triangles.

Brush with milk, cream, lightly beaten egg white or egg yolk diluted with 2 tablespoons water: sprinkle with sugar. Place on a greased baking sheet and bake in a hot oven (425'F) for 12-15 minutes. Makes 10-12 scones.

    Notes from me:
I have used white whole wheat flour for these and they have turned out fine (but not as tender and yummy as all white flour, of course.)
For brushing the scones, I always have some of the egg-milk mixture left and just use that.
Unless you love scrubbing baking sheets, I recommmend using parchment paper.
If you have any experience making biscuits (or even using playdough!) judging the correct texture for the dough should be easy.

Hope these work out for you...enjoy your 40's!

Happy New Year and Happy December Birthday!

  47. Happy belated birthday, Jen!!
I turned thirty last year, and I felt the same way as you do about turning 40. I love starting a new decade and want to strive to make my thirties even better than my twenties!
I loved your list of the forty things you want to accomplish this year. I can't wait to see what the new year has in store for you and your family. :)
