Here I Am

What a day yesterday was. My email, account and blog were "disabled" by Google. No explanation. I spent the day emailing them and looking for info on what happened and it was not pretty. They can do this without warning and you may never get it back. I was very lucky that I got mine back within a day. There is this whole process that you have to go through that usually takes longer. I woke up this morning and was happy to find everything as it should be with an email from Google saying "Our apologies for the inconvenience" and no explanation.

I felt so helpless and sad all day yesterday and had no way to let any of you know what was going on. Aside from my sadness about losing this blog that has chronicled the most important parts of my life for the last 5+ years, I was angry and heartbroken because I have lost so much in my life and after my Mom was killed my brother and I were not given her things, nor was I given a letter that she wrote to me to receive upon her death. It is a long, complicated story that I will share one day but it's effect on me when I thought I had lost the comments she has left on this blog were devastating.

Today I am thankful but wary and considering my options for a move. Know that I would never disappear without a word. I would never delete this blog. I would never treat you that way.

Thank you all for your concern. I hope to be back later today with a more upbeat post. You can't keep a good woman down.

  3. That worries me too now that you mention it! I'm happy to hear they got it back for you. It also reminded me of something. A couple years ago a girlfriend gave me the gift of 1 yr of my blog printed in a hardcover book. I need to do the other years still. Here is the site she used. The quality is great and at only $25.00it's worth the price. Much cheaper than scrapbooking!!!

  4. I've heard of this happening to others, as well. Oh my goodness, I don't know what I'd do! I'm so glad you were able to get everything back.

I have my posts gathered together in book form, as well. It's a really good way to keep a written record of your blog. There are several sites that do this - you can do it in paperback or hard cover. I'd recommend it Jen. I used Blurb.

  7. Although I'm not a blogger, I am a faithful reader of your blog so I was disappointed yesterday to see it gone. Anyways, I'm glad your back and I think Ali's idea of having your blog printed in a book is wonderful and a great way for your to preserve your blog! Have a wonderful holiday.

  8. I am so glad all is well. I had another friend just have the very same thing happen to her. It is amazing how much these online journals mean to us and I can only imagine what losing that precious connection to your mom meant to you.

I agree with the others having your blog printed seems like a good idea. Patty

  15. Jen,
You can also back up your published blog posts to your computer. Donna at Funky Junk Interiors wrote a tutorial: http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/01/back-up-your-blog-today.html

Hope that helps. :-) Nothing makes me crazier than email/blog/computer issues! -amy

  18. I am so sorry for what happened in your family and for what happened to your blog. That must have been scary. I have often thought about printing out some of my more meaningful posts to keep.

  19. I'm with Amy.....back it up, baby.
I just did it last week, but hadn't done it since last April! Monthly is probably a good idea, I would imagine. It's easy to forget though. It takes just minutes and is super easy.

  23. I am so sorry to hear that happened to you, Jen. I am also sorry for all the losses in your life...especially the letter from your mother. THAT is just sad. I had something similar happen with my own father so I do understand the pain it causes.

Blessings. Do you back your blog up on an exterior drive? I have started doing that. xo Diana

  24. J, terrible! I'm so sorry. Glad everything is back in place. And I loved your last line. :)

ps - Back up a blog? Say what?? I need T on speed dial, I guess...

  25. I totally understand how devastated you would feel to lose your blog. Whenever a computer crashes, and I fear losing photos, etc., my heart aches. I have backed up everything online--but not blogs. Not sure how to, if it is possible.

It is good to know that Google can fix such an issue, that's for sure. I've heard that everything remains online, somewhere, somehow.

Please do post the story about your mother. I would love to read it.

Sending a hug and good wishes.

  27. P.S. we use Carbonite as our back up service...as long as your blog posts are saved to your computer, they save everything (everyday)

  28. What a relief that you didn't lose our Mom's comments.
My Mom died in 2004 and I love the letters I have from her.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas.

  29. My mom passed away over ten years ago and I miss her so much even now. After I got married, she married my stepfather (my father died suddenly when I was a child) who wasn't bad at first but by the time he passed away... he was horrible.

The last few years of her life, I rarely was able to visit her but at least we knew we loved each other. But my sisters and I agreed it was like losing our mother long before she died.

I'm so glad you were quickly able to resolve the situation with Blogger. You would be missed.

  30. Whew! I was worried for sure. That is scary. I would hate to lose my blog. Glad you are back! Kit

  33. oh dear! What an awful thing to have happen! Ali, I was thinking about hearing a blog book could be made,I think I will check that out. Also, Deb, I wasn't aware one could save their blog on our own computer...any direction for that for those of us who are less than "savy"??
Jen, hoping all is better...the feelings things like this can bring up are quite deep...hoping you have found peace..

  34. Wow. Go out and buy lots of ink and paper and print out your archives. I never thought about losing all of our words.

We lost 2 months of pictures last year when our computer died. We (Chuck) hadn't copied them to the "blah, blah" (I don't understand computer lingo)so when the computer died we lost the pictures from that period of time.
Good thing I wasn't skinny in those pictures or I would be devastated to have lost that proof! ha.

    Life in the 2000's...

    Merry Christmas Sweet Jen!

  36. Wow! Why would Google do something like that...that's just crazy.

I see several posters mentioned the service that will print you blog as a book. What an invaluable keepsake that would be for you.

Take care and have a very Merry Christmas.

  37. Ali had the same idea I have. I remember reading about a blogger who had a service print her blog out for her into a book. She was thrilled. I'm glad your lovely blog is back.
