J is for Joy

For the last 9 months I've worked hard making over this house and, while I know there will always be a project (or 3) in the wings, I've decided to start taking some time to do things that I love. I've embraced a slower pace for my projects and I've decided to give myself permission to spend time doing things that make me happy.

The only way I know I can follow through with this is to put myself on a bit of a schedule. My plan is to spend from 7:30 (when I drop Emma at school) to 11am every morning taking care of  the house, business, running errands and working out. Then I will have until 2:15 (when I pick up Emma) to spend however I choose. I'm finding it satisfying to accomplish so much so early and I don't feel guilty if I want to do something fun with part of my day.

I know this isn't going to work every day and I have no intention of being rigid about it but I also know that I need the routine and hope this allows me to carve out time on most days to bring a little extra j-o-y into my life. Do you schedule pleasure into your day?

  2. I agree with your plan. We all need to make those spaces in our lives to do something just for us. Even if it doesn't always happen daily. Good for you!

  3. i am the opposite, i tend to play first and then squeeze in the "to-dos" but somehow i always end up out of time. A schedule would be a great thing to keep me on track. A girl always needs "me " time :)

  5. I spend my mornings in the studio painting simply because I am most creative then. I take an hour or so for myself around noon to journal, meditate or read uplifting books.
It works for me but I do need to try to stay on schedule....discipline isn't always my strength.

  6. Great idea. I used to do that when my kids were little. You need TWO J's...to stand for Jen's Joy! xo Diana

  8. I love your blog! I like your plan. I had a similar plan when my kids were in school. And I allowed myself to go to a movie once a week - I movie that I wanted to see - usually a chic flick. We need to give ourselves time to do the things that we enjoy.

  9. i love your plan! we homeschool...and so much of our morning is spent doing school. my youngest still takes a little nap each afternoon, which is also "quiet time" for my older two. i set aside that time for me...to craft, to read, to plan, to bake, to chat with a friend. i also find that my most creative time is at night when everyone else is fast asleep :)

  10. I am leaving a highly stressful job this week, and I have similar thoughts. I know starting off with an intentional routine will be important. Thanks!

  11. Oh girl, you are preaching to the choir!!!!! I so know what you mean and I don't even have any kidos at home any longer.....I do get up early and get chores done around the house and out in the barn, but a lot of days it is almost noon before I am showered and dressed....I know, I know....I am so bad! My issue is I feel like I have to get every single thing done on my to-do list before I can have fun doing what I want to....I have so many projects of my own I want to do, it doesn't help trying to keep up with my antique business either.....i-ya-ya!

  13. Your plan sounds lovely! I am working full time at the moment. So, that reeeeeally cuts into my creative time. Drat! :(
I did tell myself that I would try to schedule more of it into my time away from work because I get "out of sorts" when I don't have creative time in my life. Us creative people need to feed that....don't we? :)
    Have a great day!

  18. I have always scheduled in time for me. What I did with that time has varied over the years. Right now, my goal is to do something creative every day. As long as I get my creative fix in each day, I'm pretty happy.
