Serenity Now

Today I am escaping to the studio. It is an escape from reality. Below is my reality. Below is what happened when our football team didn't have a Sunday game and I casually mentioned that I would really like to have the horizontal planking finished on the walls soon because it is grossing me out to cook in this space. Instead said husband tore out the ceiling, including a big hole not visible in this picture, where the plaster and lathe has been exposed and where the old house rained it's nastiness all over said kitchen, including somehow, inside the refrigerator. Yay progress!

My loving husband informed me that you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Well of course you do. But only the guy that never cleans up after himself would break them by throwing them against the wall. Yay progress!

So today I could take it no longer and escaped to my happy place where I gazed longingly at piles of fabrics and flipped through stacks of books trying to decide what to make. Few things in this life make me happier than a stack of good books.

It was a perfect crisp, dreary day. The kind best suited to creative pursuits and kitty sidekicks, cozy sweaters, Gilmore Girls playing in the background and lunch eaten in the studio (because clearly I'm not eating in the kitchen).  I managed to finally finish my vacation journal and for a short while I forgot that my kitchen looks like it was struck by a natural disaster. That really is progress.

  1. I love your studio, Jen! I could see why you'd want to escape there, especially while your kitchen is undergoing...um, transformation. What did you decide to start working on, craft-wise?

  2. I put Gilmore Girls on in the background when I have projects to do or a lot of cooking/baking ahead of me. I love escaping to Stars Hollow and getting lost in my project. =) I even named my daughter Rory.

and just so you know - if that stack of books ever goes missing - don't look at me heeheeee!

  4. Definitely inspires me to get to work on my space. Needing some quiet creating time. It does wonders to calm me. Love your space!

  5. Oh I was watching Gilmore Girls today while crafting, too. I guess it seems like crafting in Stars Hollow is like crafting with friends.

Good luck with your kitchen...you will survive and be so glad you took on the project.

  6. Oh how I miss the Gilmore Girls. I must try to find it on DVD.
After a zillion years renovating our house I totally understand your need to escape from the works. Hang in there, it is amazing how quickly you forget about the mess when the room is finished. :)

  7. Jen. I. Don't. Know. What. To. Say.

Your man may need to take a few vacation days to finish what he started...or you no cookee for long time.

Putting you on our church's Prayer List. ;) Julia

  8. Jeez Jen, I'd go into the studio and stay until that kitchen disappears. What an extreme difference, Beauty and The Beast. Hang in there. We have all been in your shoes. With The Man's skill and your magic touch, that kitchen will rise from the ashes.

  11. I am also married to a guy who never cleans up after himself so I can relate. Keep crafting to keep sane (and know that your kitchen will be pretty one day!)

  15. I am the queen of escaping when I need to clean or finish a boring project so I know how that goes. Your escape sounds like a great place to be.
Your kitchen is reality that I forget sometimes. I dream of the new neighborhood and the house that will need tons of work...but I forget it will look like that first. Can't wait to see more progress!

  16. I wish that there was a "like" button on blogs as there is on Facebook so that I could click it. I should clarify that I like your escape to your studio on a rainy day with the Gilmore Girls, not the kitchen mess! However, have faith, you are on the road to better things in the kitchen!

  17. ohhh myyyyyy. i'm so sorry for the chaos in your happy place! wanna come to minnesota for a few days and chill? i'll make you a pumpkin-something? you can bring your darling girl and she and henry can fall madly in 12-year-old love and vow to marry when they are 28 and live smack dab between our homes ... somewhere in the middle of wisconsin? okay. it's a date. i'll see you tomorrow.

  18. Oh you poor dear, I would be equally upset as I am an organized person and I HATE chaos! Is your hubby aware that you CANNOT COOK until he finishes? Maybe if he gets hungry enough he will expedite things - ha ha. In the meanwhile, just keep the vision of the finished kitchen in your head to keep you going!

  19. Hide in there until he gets it presentable, is my advice to you.

  20. Thank goodness you have that darling little studio to escape to! I would set up a hot plate, toaster, cooler and coffee pot in there, too, until my kitchen was done! Hang in there, it will be beautiful and worth all the awful. xx

  22. Hello Kindred spirit :) First - your studio space is something that I dream about ... mine is a tiny smidgen of a room that can really only fit one person at a time! My heart goes out to you with regards to your kitchen ... I tore down wallpaper in mine which revealed unprimed and damaged dry wall (the state is current ... and causes me to sigh deeply when passing through). And, Gilmore Girls??? My daughter and I ADORE that show!! I love that you are one to play shows/movies in the background - - I do the very same thing to set the mood while I paint! My go tos are typically The Family Stone and The Holiday :) Even in summer... Best wishes for a speedy kitchen remodel!
