Falling

Autumn is starting to settle into the Village. There have been a few false starts but it finally seems here to stay with the exception of the occasional slightly too warm day, which can be forgiven. I love this time of year. I think there may be a law that exists that says that if you are a knitter, you will spend half the year waiting for, as I affectionately think of it, hand knit season. The happiness that fills my soul at the idea of getting out my woolies would be hard to explain to anyone that isn't knitting obsessed. I thought it might help if I give you a peak into my sock drawer.

There. Did that make your heart flutter? If not I might be worried about the state of your soul.

With fall's arrival, there has been much nest fluffing happening around here-small changes to welcome the season. Switching out some pillows, throws and accessories makes me feel ready to hunker down.

The daily dog walks are starting to take on a golden hue and there have been many hours passed on the porch gliding with Clover. I should probably insert a picture of her here so you can see how big she's getting but I don't have any recent ones. Just kidding. My phone is approximately 90% pet photos and 10% yarn and tea photos.

Clover spends a great deal of her life pleading with Winnie to love her. We were making serious progress until some careless person (Me) left the gate open and Clover bolted upstairs giving chase to an unsuspecting kitty, causing her to lose at least one of her lives. Now we seem to be starting from scratch. This is practically my full time job. NOTE: These photos were taken before we started over.

Despite the previous story, she really is calming down and turning into a lovely girl. She will soon be 1 which I find shocking. So much work has gone into her first year of life. When you see a well behaved dog, it's no accident. Especially for certain breeds. And rest assured she is not well behaved 100% of the time. Not. Even. Close. But she is regularly complimented on her behavior and is turning into the sweetest baby...especially first thing in the morning. I feel like I could write a book on raising a Golden Retriever puppy. Chapter one: TAKE YOUR PUPPY TO TRAINING CLASSES Chapter two: REINFORCE TRAINING REGULARLY Chapter three: Spend approximately 50% of your income on treats, toys, chews, dog park memberships and doggy camp. You're welcome! ;)

As the days grow shorter, I want to spend more time with my nose in books. I've recently joined an instagram book club of sorts as well as buying a book box. I am thrilled to note that books seem to be enjoying a revival and as I can't imagine a world without them, it makes me very happy to be a part of that. I mean, I love my kindle for reading while I knit but the pleasure of turning pages or burying your nose in a book (literally) and inhaling deeply, just isn't the same with electronics.

I'm feeling very inspired lately and wishing I had many more hours in the day so I could do all the things I'm feeling drawn to do. And then also, so I could do nothing at all.

I hope you are all well. I know blogs aren't really what they used to be but I can't give up this place that has given me a home for my memories for all these years. I'll be back next week with a glimpse of what I've been making lately. Happy fall y'all!

  1. I truly love your blog, thank you so much for posting. It is amazing how much I look forward to reading your thoughtful posts and seeing your beautiful pictures. They are so inspiring and restful for me, a small mini vacation in my hectic days. I just wanted to say thank you, and your socks are gorgeous!

  2. I love reading your peaceful words and seeing photos of your gorgeous home and furbabies! Your pup is getting so big, too bad things are a little tense with the kitty!

  3. Your blog has always been one of my favorites, Jen. Please don't stop! In fact, I wish you'd post more often! (No pressure or anything, lol.) I don't know if it's just my computer, but in the first few paragraphs of your blog (up until the paragraph, "As the days grow shorter), the font is super tiny. I can barely read it. Thought I'd let you know.

You have so much patience with your sweet pup. I could never handle all that with a dog. Guess that's one reason I'm not a dog person. ;-) Clover sure is beautiful though...and I absolutely love that picture of her face cuddled up next to the kitty.

Your knitted socks are amazing. I can only imagine how luxurious they feel on your tootsies.

I'll never stop reading books. I always have my nose in one (or two or three). I don't even have an e-reader. I have to have a real book in my hands. I just started The Light Between Oceans and am loving it. What's a book box?

Your home looks so cozy and beautiful for fall.
    xoxo

    1. Thanks, Melanie! I don't know what that was about but it should be fixed now.

I only just got an e-reader for Mother's Day this year strictly because I was losing so much reading time to knitting and I am not good at paying attention to audio books but I only like it in certain situations and nothing could ever replace my real books! A book box is a subscription surprise box with a book and other themed things inside. I'll post when it gets here! Thanks for visiting, Melanie and always being so kind!

  4. Those socks look wonderful. I know how it feels to sink my feet into a snuggly warm hand knit pair. My husband has just had the latest pair and the next ones are for me... it is becoming sock season. Sandals can go away until next summer now.

  5. And I am so glad you continue to blog so I can share your wonderful life! I too love to nest at this time of year, and I write, while you knit. Both great ways to enjoy the season! Happy Fall my friend. :) Kit

  6. Your life is looking so serene right now. Ha, I am sure that is not the case but it does look lovely. Clover is a beauty. My two are turning 1 next month and I have to say that they are no that well behaved. I think having two from the same litter makes it twice as hard to train them. Still we are all a work in progress, right?

    1. It's only as serene as golden retriever puppy will allow! I do think you probably deserve an award for raising two puppies!

  7. its my favorite time of the year as well. Its finally gotten cool enough the last couple days that I could wear socks. I'm so glad Clover is growing into a sweet dog. She is so cute! My maggie is so social, we didn't get her to the dog park enough this past summer because of the heat but her besties are neighbours and I regularly have them over and lets jsut say, chaos doesn't even describe it all. olivia

    1. It's hard to get them out in the heat and you are so lucky to have playmates next door! We find ourselves trying to schedule playdates like we did when the kids were little!

  9. Fall has not shown up here yet. Day time temps in the low 80's still. We are having a warmer fall than normal and the weatherman said that our leaf colors will be a couple of weeks late this year. Love you socks and your sweet puppy!

    1. I know just what you mean, Sherry. We lost our last golden at 12 1/2 and her meds cost a fortune. As it turned out she was still much less expensive than a puppy. I hope we have many happy years with her. Give your put a kiss on the snout from me.

  12. I love your sock drawer!! (and your dog) Your comments on her are so true! I had to laugh at your "nest fluffing"--me too. I always enjoy reading your blog. And I so agree with you on "real" books.

  14. Love this post especially the socks! Some people trade out their warm weather with their cold weather clothes, but I trade out my warm weather socks for my cold weather socks. I love socks!

Have you ever followed the #sockssunday meme on IG? It's so much fun!

  17. That sock drawer is glorious and your sweet pup is just so precious.
Also, please come decorate and fluff my house. Currently, all my fall things are just strewn about waiting for someone to make sense of them. I think that person should be you. :)

  21. I have enjoyed your posts and I like that you wrote about Clover. My parents used to raise Goldens in the Midwest when I was young. We had some very sweet pups and my dad was an expert trainer of the pups. Back then people built kennels and dog houses in their big fenced yards to keep the pack safe. Extreme winters our dogs spent time in our walk out basement-complete with a fireplace. I still love Goldens! We have Australian shepherds now because we fell in love with that breed. I would like to have another golden some day.
