Curtain Call

Wednesday? Really? How'd that happen? I've been so busy volunteering at school these last 2 weeks that I'm not getting a lot else accomplished. I'm trying hard to get work done on the dining room but between the lack of time and the fact that Joann Fabrics had the very nerve to discontinue the medium brown linen fabric that I want to use for the curtains & I'm left with my head just spinning. So, I'm looking at the above khaki curtains from Pottery Barn and the brown silk below from Country Curtains but I'm still left mourning for my brown linen. I hope I'll be able to move on soon.

In other news, the sun has finally poked it's shiny little head out today. I think my neighborhood might float away if we get much more rain. Tomorrow is the last the day of school for my kids. I know they are so excited. I am too. Mostly.

So, I'd love to hear any recommendations for reasonably priced 96" curtains besides Overstock, PB, Country Curtains, Target, LNT and JCPenney. In the meantime I guess I'll be hitting some other fabric stores hunting for just the right shade of brown linen. Think they'll take my Joann's coupon?

  1. :( boo, Joanns.

I still think you can add a fabric panel to extend regular 84" curtains and make it work. The extra cash they have you spend fo 96-ers is ridiculous.

Love the smocking on the PB ones though. *sigh*

  2. Try Bed Bath & Beyond. Some of the options are hideous, but I found some nice linen and burlap-y curtains there last summer.

  3. I have the JCPenney Pinch Pleat drapes and they are divine. I have them in a creamy white color. I have noticed that Penney's often has sales - mine were buy one, get one for 88 cents. Good luck!

  4. Let me know if you find them because I'm looking for the same thing!! Can you possibly contact other JoAnn's to see if they still have some yardage in stock? Or perhaps I can do a road trip for the both of us and go to the Gigantic Fabric Store in Chicago. I bet I could fit lots of yardage in a suitcase and get it home safely on the train. What do you think?

P.S. I'm redoing my daughter's bedroom into a studio based on one featured in Mary Engelbreit's Home Companion. Medium brown linen...yep.

  8. Oh, you're singing my song sister on the last 2 weeks of school. I am d-r-a-g-g-i-n-g!

Try the Curtain Exchange. High quality fabrics and very well made. At least when I inspected a few sets for clients in Atlanta.

  9. Check out Fabric.com Jen. I have purchased fabric from them and they usually have a good selection of linen. If you are looking for someone to make them...Sharon from GI (iamii) gave me a great price several years ago. Just a thought.

I'm green with envy...I love linen curtains and settled for the linen blend from PB. They are pretty...it's just not the same though. Linen is linen and I want mine to be 100%!

Oh. Another thought. I think Ballards has some burlap panels that are lined for a very reasonable price.

  11. I recently bought the Antique Satin curtains from Country Curtains for my living room. It is a nice "nubby" silk-looking fabric. I plan to add a little fringe or other trim near the top to give them a little more style.

  13. Hi..I got some really nice natural linen at Joanne's they had a ton of it...it has a small weave of red thread at the edge and it sort of frayed it looks nice. I made some curtains for my scrap table and I'm waiting on my bamboo rod to hand the other curtains...in the family room...want me to take a picture of it and send it to you and if you want the material I can pick it up at my Joanne's and send it to you...?

  15. Hey, girl-
I know you can sew, so...Home Depot has the best "yardage" canvas drop cloths. Im using them at the coastal nest for a curtain, AND at the new temporary location for the shop for separating "rooms" I love the really natural nubby feel, a bit heavy but the color is great, and for about $18 for a gigantic cloth, its totally worth it.
    Check it out!

  16. I love the top ones...but I'm betting I wouldn't love the price!!
What about Pier One or Sears? Our Canadian site has a ROOTS line that has taupe linen curtains that are divine!!

Good luck..I just know the room is going to be gorgeous. Everything you do, is!!

  17. I got dark brown linen curtains from IKEA. They were REALLY long. The idea was to cut and hem them yourself...so the price was reasonable. They are machine washable and then I put them in the dryer to get out the wrinkles. They are great.

  18. Zgallerie often has nice curtains at reasonable prices.

  19. Wow. Smocked curtains. That would be heaven. I dont have any suggestions, b/c in the end I wimped out and put white and sheer curtains in my house. But I wait anxiously to see what you do...

  20. Just a note about linen. It fades, even if it's linned. It's a natural fabric, so it will always fade.
    Good luck.

If you are considering a panel to extend the length, Camilla at Home has a lovely picture in her 06/04/08 blog entry.

I purchased queen or king clearance sheets from Land's End (an oxford fabric stripe that we were already using for bed linens) and machine stitched grosgrain ribbon loops at the top (actually a loop, not a tie). These were the least expensive curtains I ever found, very high quality, totally washable, and only required the time to sew the loops, as all sides were finished. Try someones' bed and bath department if you strike out elsewhere.

  22. Try Ballard's and West Elm...Love the new look. I've written down the name of that paint color. It is exactly what I want to do with the guest room in the new house!

  26. If you're anywhere near an Ikea, they have very long linen curtain panels (pretty sure they're 98-100"), and very inexpensive (or I wouldn't have them hanging in my dining room!)

  27. LOVE fabric.com - I just received 20 yards of fabric from them for window treatments - gorgeous and well priced.
