Playing Favorites

Yesterday I asked that Sweet Hubby of mine which room in our house was his favorite and which was his least favorite, assuming that he would say the dining room just because it is the least used room in our house and we are a people that like to live in every room we have. Imagine my surprise when he said our master bedroom.

I've decided not to take that personally, but to assume it's because, like most of you I bet, I haven't made decorating our room a priority since we are the only people who usually see it. To be honest when I asked myself the same question, the studio was hands down my favorite and I had to completely agree that our bedroom is also my least favorite.

Clearly I need to make the cozying up of our room my top priority. I think it should be a sanctuary, a cozy nest where we escape all of the stress of life- a place that is strictly for grown ups.

I've begun gathering some inspiration and hope to get have it done by this fall. Like most of my projects it will be done on a pretty tight budget.

Since I'm in the planning phase right now I'd love to hear about what you think a master bedroom should be. What are your favorite and least favorite rooms in your house?

  1. You read my mind...I have been dreaming about a dreamier bedroom for months now. It's pretty much a joke right now! I'd like to do something to add texture to the walls - like a fun wainscoting or even some tongue-and-groove paneling or something. For some strange reason I've been really drawn to the Ikea green Gorel curtains for our bedroom, but that may just be a passing fad, as I'm not normally geared toward bright green? I've also kicked around a picture ledge around the room. Any good ideas for a terrible, tiny bi-fold-doored closet? All I can think of is hanging curtains in place of the icky doors, but then the room starts to seem a bit curtainy...
    Sorry you asked yet??

  2. Hello.

I've just found your blog and have read back only a few pages, but wanted to comment about your post after you first discovered your vote tally on the BHG 48-hr challenge -- I would not have found your writing without that entry (I stumbled through via Making it Lovely) and I'm so glad you entered! I am brand-new to having growing space outdoors, and home-ownership with a child and other grown-up responsibilties, so I *love* what I've seen here so far. I look forward to devouring the rest of your entries now :)

  3. Right there with ya. We just bought our first house and the upstairs is awful. I'm trying to get the downstairs--just one room, completely done! :) I just started a blog of my own keeping up with the changes to the house--it's a process! :) susan @ www.peanutpetunia.blogspot.com

  4. I do not have a favorite room in my new house, as it feels like it is a vacation home I am just visiting, and as I do not have a budget for this new home yet, I must be content with being on vacation and enjoying the beautiful landscaping that came with this home. But dreaming about a master bedroom is a favorite past-time of mine. I want ours to be minimal, but aesthetically delightful. Cozy and inviting, but clean lines. I want to mix new and yet have a lovely worn piece and I want some shiny accents. Can't wait to see what you do with yours, as I am certain it will be tasteful and beautiful.

  5. My master bedroom is also my least favorite room. Just haven't put the time into it. Looking forward to seeing what you do!

  6. Thanks for posting all those beautiful bedroom pics. We had our master bedroom repainted a year ago and that's about as far as I got with the decorating. The pics have given me inspiration! Can't wait to see what you do with your room!

  7. i love these images jen & look forward to seeing what you create.

i feel that keeping our master bedroom a special place is very important. not filled with laundry baskets and kids junk. i love for that room to feel calming & relaxing, not too fussy....nor too feminine for him. i would love to have a large comfy sofa in a sitting room off to the side....sigh.

just saw you posted a ready for the challenge....need to go back & see what else you're up to

  8. I had he same epiphany a few months ago about our master bedroom. I'd say they only thing it's still missing now is some seating. It would just be nice to have a place to sit other than the bed. Good luck!

  9. It is funny because it seems that the master bedroom is the most neglected room when it comes to nesting. For me, I always count it as one of the first rooms because that is our sanctuary, our getaway and you can really do it on a very tight budget. Our bedroom is not very big but I did it on a very tight budget...garage sales, estate sales, love TJ Maxx and Homegoods. Have fun.

  10. What great inspiration photos! Without hesitation I can say that our guest room/office/computer room/craft room is my least favorite. Our master bedroom is runner-up, though. My favorite would probably be our living room. I love the warm color in there, the comfy furniture, the books. It's probably a little too monochromatic, but I can live with that. :)

  11. One of our projects this summer is to paint and update the master bedroom, and I've been looking for inspiration. Your inspiration rooms are perfect for me! So thanks for posting them...Choosing the colors is the hardest part b/c I love so many!

I found just cleaning all the clutter out of the room and re-arranging the furniture recently has helped so much in making the room seem like a retreat. Now I want to spend time in there! And maybe I even sleep better?

We've got space for a little "sitting nook"--very tiny but it'll do--so I'm finding two chairs to place there so hubby and I can get away to chat, have tea, etc. some days. We're always looking for that "away space" in our home, and it's hard to find on the main floor of our small-ish Foursquare. Making the space in our bedroom will be perfect, as the kids hardly venture in there.

  12. I love my bedroom but that is because I have a husband who does not mind it being very romantic (i.e. girly). I did let him add a flat screen (major compromise on my part!) but that is because I got to put a faux fireplace under it. Best of both worlds! And shhhhhh...don't tell...but I secretly really love watching tv from bed now too!

  13. Love your bedroom inspiration photos. I like our bedroom best, all whites and creams, with a small touch of turquoise and pink mixed in. Very sweet and relaxing. Least favourite room is hands down the playroom in the basement - a disaster :)

  14. Our master bedroom is absolutely the worst room in our house. The bedroom is peach with a darker peach in the onsuite bathroom. It's awful. We have the paint already, a lovely sage green, but I haven't begun to paint yet. Really need to do a clearing of unwanted/un-needed items first. I can't wait to see what you do with your bedroom. As I'm still in the planning stage and really have no money to do anything this year but dream, I'm going to live vicariously through you. (if you don't mind) tehehe

  16. Beautiful inspiration rooms! I think my favorite is the third one down. So pretty. You know, I'm not really sure what my favorite room in the house is. But I can definitely list my kids bedrooms as my least favorite. They are getting better, as my husband and I painted their old beds this spring, so that helps. But there are still so many things that we would like to do in their rooms. Eventually they will come together. :)

  17. jen, i am chuckling because just yesterday my downstairs looked so pretty with the sun coming in, we had just hung some frames, there are plants and flowers, and then i thought, geez, i am so uninspired about the bedroom.

because our basement isn't finished, half of our bedroom continues to be storage. not pretty. i have a nice hemnes set from ikea but no headboard. no art. not much light.

some day i envision it being a cozy cabin type of room. someplace maurice from northern exposure would like. but until then, half ikea/half cardboard.

sorry to ramble but 2 more things:
    1) i will head to BHG!
    2) i am having a giveaway if you would like to enter.

  19. My least favorite is the master bedroom too. It is a very large square room that is too big to be cozy. Painting it will be a major undertaking and so it is the only room still with that chalky builders beige paint. I've been dreaming of a beautiful blue room. I'm not crazy about blue, but for some reason seeing so much of it on home decorating blogs has grown on me.

  22. Loving that lily quilt. My favorite room is my living room, but I am taking a stay-cation next week to finish painting my boudoir and maybe even get my studio whipped into shape.

  23. The pics are all great! My favorite room in the house right now is our living room since it's freshly redone. My least favorite room would have to be our powder room. It's really in need of some attention! Of course this is all subject to change. lol Next week my fave room could be another.

  24. I've lived in my home for 12 years. My bedroom is still a work in progress. I do a little of this and a little of that every year. Peach walls, silvery sage green trim, shabby chic quilts, sheer lace panels on the windows. My favorite word to describe my bedroom is "Peaceful". You want to be able to relax and sleep in that room. I love my soothing, calm sanctuary.
