I Dream of Yarn and Other Colorful Things

I dream about yarn. I knit in my sleep. I am currently obsessed with this blanket from the Purl Soho blog and trying to find a budget priced yarn to knit it up in. Sometimes I dream about fabric or paper or just really colorful things. Few things make me happier than dreaming about aqua, red, pink, yellow and green. It makes me want to jump out of bed and create something.

The other day I decided to paint the inside of my door aqua. I have always had white. I'm tired of playing it safe. Life is too short for that. So today I started painting. I now realize that it's not enough for me to just paint the inside. I'm going to paint the outside aqua too. I find that these days I really crave color. The problem seems to be that, the more I have the more I want. Actually, maybe that is no problem at all.

As I do what I want to this house, I feel myself becoming transformed right along with it. I am now someone who knows what she wants, feels secure in that knowledge and doesn't care what other people think. It's freeing! I think this is the gift of turning 40 and of living an authentic life. We are a house full of colorful characters. It's time our surroundings reflected it.

  1. MY house is chock-full of color to which my attorney daughter shakes her head and tells me that my house (or at least my living room which is Alaska sky blue...) should be baby-poop brown like in pottery barn.
well, I say baby-poop on that! Mish it, mash it, spread COLOR everywhere. I'm wearing a fuscia pink wool blazer today! :-)

  3. Love the 'sleeping beauty' on the blanket.
I always seem to be caught up in colors that come with the seasons- right now reds, oranges, yellows, greens and browns make me cozy and happy.
Yes- I am all for whatever your own heart pulls you to!

  4. I love your post. I recently said almost the same thing about being in my 50's. I love the thought of an aqua door. I can't wait for you to share it with us. While you sleep and dream about yarn, I am awake thinking about what to knit next. It energizes me. Bonnie

  5. I want to curl up in that blanket with some toasty socks, a good book, and a big mug of hot cocoa and call it a day. I really wish now that I had asked my grandma to teach me how to knit before she passed away.
I love all the color in your pictures. What pattern are your mugs?

  7. Oh boy I can relate to this. I have always walked in a color world. When others were doing blue and mauve in the 80s and green and burgundy in the 90's I was always doing something I loved like orange and turquoise or red and pink. You gotta be you.

  10. i love that you said "the gift of turning 40." i'm petrified by the idea of 40 ... looming ... not nearly far enough away for my taste. but yes, if it means that we finally say, "this is me and this is what i like, and by golly i'm doing it," then 40 will be amazing. because by golly, yes - you SHOULD do what you want with you space because it is YOUR space. let it make you happy! and i love that blue ;o)

  15. Yes indeed! When I turned 40, I made all sorts of changes from losing weight to not being such a people pleaser. No is a wonderful word to make use of sometimes. And life is definitely too short to worry about what anyone else thinks. Do what makes you happy. Everyone says my home is like Aladdin's cave -- bright and colorful and eclectic. I wouldn't have it any other way. I love that aqua color. Paint away! And have a great day. Blessings, Tammy

  16. I think you're right about the freedom to be yourself at 40...or whatever age you look around and say, "hey, this is what I like, I'm going for it!" I follow a different drummer in my decorating and when I have guests they always smile and tell me they love my home! That's the best compliment I could ask for. The aqua sounds beautiful and the winter light will make it look even better.

  17. You are so right about color. The more you have, the more you want. Pretty soon, color will be the "neutral" in your home. My "neutral" is bright yellow. When my children's friends come over they walk around our house like they have never seen color on the walls before. Enjoy your home! Enjoy being in your 40s!

  21. I too would love to know the color of your aqua paint, and am anxious to see the finished product. I have gotten a little weary of seeing the trend of no color. When I did my kitchen remodel, I started with a very neutral plan in mind, and it didn't take long for me to realize that even though that may be the trend, it's just not me. Looking forward to see the color you are adding. Jackie
