It Wasn't My Fault

Do you know what a "gateway" food is? Well, while going to Weight Watchers I learned that there are some foods that make us eat recklessly and lead to bad behavior. These foods are so dangerous that just 1 smell or 1 taste can send you careening into the pantry for more, casting aside all desire for smaller hips, to eat with abandon until there is nothing left and you find yourself sitting on the kitchen floor clutching an empty oreo bag. Scary, isn't it?

Well, if you apply this same concept to a store, then Home Goods is my "gateway" store.

I swear to God, I just stopped to look at carry on bags for a trip we are getting ready to take, but it can't hurt to just take a leisurely stroll through the homewares dept. Then I spotted this thing of beauty from half way across the store. It is sitting all by itself. Not another one anywhere in sight. It.was.calling.to.me. I was hooked. I had to go get a look at it. I'm chanting the entire time. Please don't be expensive. Please don't be expensive. In my hurry, I hit a sweet old lady with my cart. Sorry, I can't stop to see if you are okay. Please don't be expensive. Please don't let anyone get there before me. And then I get to it and hold my breath while looking for the price. $40. Crap. I shouldn't spend that much. But I really love it. I shouldn't spend that much. But I really love it. Then I look at the manufacturer's tag. Made in Memphis. Hey, I lived in Memphis for 15 years. It's a sign from God. I'll eat peanut butter sandwiches for lunch for the next 2 weeks. It's worth it. The possibilities are endless.

The top filled with some of my favorite stamps.
The bottom filled with some of my favorite embellishments.

  1. I so know what you mean as someone who is wondering how to make one loaf do sandwiches for 5 people for a week (well the Cath Kidston mobile phone had my name on, didn't it?) Rest easy, you will have enough and for every thing else there's always a credit card.

  2. You are not alone! I think I may have caused injury to the odd shopper who just happened to be in the line of fire when spotting a 'must-have' item across the room! Lovely choice by the way - enjoy the peanut butter sandwiches!!!

  3. I LOVE that! I know what you mean about Home Goods. I can't go in there and come out with just one thing. I love that store. That is so much better than any carry-on bag I've ever seen.

  7. I went shopping there today too. Let me just say HomeGoods is like crack. A dangerous, addictive and expensive habit that can be torture to try to give up. Hello, my name is Heather, and I'm an addict and you are not alone. Welcome dear friend.

  8. Great organizer! No don't shop with control....it's more fun to be

  9. Home Goods must be like Home Sense in Canada - filled to the brim with bargains ... I have a very similar white iron "plant stand" that held potted plants on my deck in the summer - then went downstairs for the winter and did double duty holding all my jars of pencils, markers, paint brushes, watercolour paints etc (which is where I think it will stay).

  13. Remember Jen, the biggest regrets in our lives are the things we "didn't" buy and the things we "didn't" do!!!
Also, my theory about feeling guilty, if you will reallllly feel guilty, don't do it, if you do it, don't waste the deliciousness by feeling guilty.
OK now I feel better, it is pretty, it doesn't exactly break the bank and it is practical too, how good is that!

  14. Very very cute!

I did the same thing yesterday. I went to Craft Warehouse to get more twigs for my urns. $56 later, I bought some of the most unbelievable distressed candle sticks. %70 off! I found a few other things too. What's a girl to do?

  18. I bought a 3-tiered black wire basket stand in the summer, put it in a closet and forgot about it. Seeing your lovely wire thingy makes me want to paint mine and use it to store something. Hmm....another project to obsess over once things slow down around here :)

  25. I'm sure I would have done the same thing! My only problem is "where would I put it?" Since space is limited around my house, I am a hoarder of vintage linens... I can ALWAYS find a place for those! ;) Wonderful blog you have (you actually found me first)!

  30. Once when we were knewly married I spent our weekly grocery budget on antique Fiesta Ware. Now I don't even like Fiest Ware, but at the time I thought it was feeding my soul instead of my tummy! I'm right there with ya!
